Housing Grants for Single Mothers

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs states that in order to survive there are four basic needs that all human beings need for developing healthy psychologically; food, water, warmth, and shelter. For a single mother, these four things can be hard to provide when dealing with a struggling economy. That is why there are ways to help single mothers like yourself get the help you need in providing adequate shelter for your family. No one should worry about where there next bed will be and if they’ll have shelter before the next storm. >

Habitat for Humanity

The Habitat for Humanity is a form of a housing grant for single mothers. Unlike usual grants it is not in the form of money. Instead it is in the form of a home that is built by a group of volunteers and the family who will use the home. To qualify for this form of housing assistance you must meet certain financial criteria. You must also be willing to volunteer to help build a future Habitat for Humanity home for another needy family or single parent in the future. Contact your local housing authority or the department of social services for more information on the Habitat for Humanity program.

The Family Unification Program

Sometimes families become separated due to the inability of the single mother to provide adequate and safe housing for her children. This doesn’t mean that the children have been taken away only that they may be staying with relatives temporarily. The Family Unification Program provides a grant voucher to parents who are in need of help in purchasing or renting safe housing for themselves and their family. This program is available through HUD, or the Housing and Urban Development Association. The program is only available to people whom the department of social services have deemed in great need of safe housing. A lack of safe housing must be the only reason preventing the parent from having their child or children living with them.

Housing Choice Vouchers

Although these vouchers are not technically grants they work in the same way. As a federal program, the Housing Choice Voucher provides assistance to single mothers as well as low-income families to help with acquiring affordable housing grants for single mothers. With this program a landlord is paid a subsidy of the rent for the mother. The rest is paid for by the mother.

Affordable housing shouldn’t be stressful. Providing a home should be something everyone can do.

Housing Assistance for Low-Income Families

Many low-income families require assistance with affordable housing, and programs and policies that fulfill these needs help many people realize their lifelong dream of being a homeowner. Before one applies for public housing assistance programs in Dallas, some important points should be remembered.

The American government helps in providing affordable and sustainable housing to low-income families by giving them considerably decent rental accommodation as part of public housing programs. There are an estimated number of almost a million households that have been aided by Federal funds. The HUD or the -Department of Housing and Urban Development- looks after these housing assistance programs for low-income families. There are a number of HA or Housing Agencies that manage these assistance programs. Providing affordable housing to low-income families is a stabilizing attempt made by the US government, to have balance in the social structure.

At the time of the Great Depression, many Americans were left with almost no money which was the result of widespread unemployment. This was the time when housing help was first provided to low-income families.

Criteria of eligibility: In order to make sure that the public aid is going to really needy applicants, and the grant of aid is not being abused in any way, the HA decides on the eligibility of the applicants based on a criterion. The gross annual income of an applicant has to be either 50% of AMI or Average Median Income, or 80% of AMI. Those whose income is 80% of AMI belong to the -low-income- category while those whose salary is 50% of AMI belong to -very low-income- category.
